Couch-to-5k Second Workout

Second interval run. So proud of myself!

3:55pm Starting out with walking. Most boring part ever.
3:57pm Seriously, it's only been two minutes?
3:58pm Mmm, smells like barbeque weather. Love all the purple flowers on the patios.
3:59pm I'm also at the end of my running area, where the heck am I going to run. Should've taken the road.
4:00pm First run. Not bad. Uh-oh, slight side cramp. Shoot, this better not put me down for the count.
4:02pm Yay, the walking time totally allows for the cramp to be breathed away.
4:03pm Guess I'll go run over where they are doing the new construction. Oops, I'll have to jump fences during my running time. That counts.
4:03pm 30 sec Wow, I've worked up a sweat already. Awesome.
4:05pm Ooh, pretty sunset through the trees from the construction area.
4:07pm Running time. Uh-oh, did I seriously forget water? I am breathing heavy and this side cramp is coming back with every run. At least it's leaving with the walks.
4:08pm Better head back to my place.
4:09pm 30 seconds Can't believe I forgot water. Dumb. Hope it doesn't ruin my good feeling about running. Note to self: BRING WATER.
4:10pm Routine at this point. Side cramp while running, walk off the side cramp, run again. Thinking this may have to do with my lack of water.
4:14pm Almost back to the house, but need to walk off this last cramp.
4:15pm Totally covered in sweat. Love it.
4:15pm 30 sec Back at the house within 30 seconds of my target time. Awesome.

Never Drink Spoiled Milk

Hi there... this is somechick, guest blogging! This is my first time, so be nice. Today we have a lesson in milk. And drinking it... spoiled.

I log onto MySpace today to see an update in "status" from my older sister. It says "[Sister] thinks she drank spoiled milk... I'm home sick!" Cutest thing if you can hear her saying it. So I send her a comment saying:

Spoiled milk!? EWE!!!!! :P I will not TOUCH the carton if it's near the date. Even if it's a sell buy... you don't mess with milk.

[Sister] replies:

Ugh, I know. And I'm one of those that thinks I'm never gonna get sick from bad food. And I'll even drink after the expiration (that 7days or whatever) if it smells good. [BF] worries about everything being bad. So the story is: We bought it like on Sunday or something. Unpacked all the groceries except for the milk!! Left it in the car overnight until I remembered it Monday morning and called [BF] to see if he could check the trunk. He found it and said it still felt cold so I said let's put it in the fridge and see how it smells later. (It makes it back to the fridge around noon.) So i smelt it later and it smelled pretty good so decided to keep it. Then yesterday morning I smelt it before I took it to work with me for my cereal and it had like a small funk smell, but not bad enough to scare me (that was my big mistake). So yeah, and of course I drank it with cereal so I couldn't taste if it was bad. Then my stomach was rumbling. I made it through work, but last night was miserable and today I am just recovering. :( I will take your advice from now on.

M is the same way, brave (aka, stupid) and drinks the milk based on said "sniff test" without hesitation. If the milk sat out too long after cereal I will by a new carton! Am I crazy?

Heart Pounding

The smoke alarm goes off, I smell smoke. I look around and see a candle burning innocently and my oven has just been turned off a few minutes before. We live in apartments and I remember that fire coming from other apartment homes can sit in the walls from and whole buildings can burn down. I tell the kids to go outside. I look around, wondering if I should save anything and decide I just need my purse and my cell phone to get to safety. I grab them, along with my cordless phone to call 911, and walk outside with the kids. The alarm has gone off now and I tell the operator that, but that I still smell smoke. He sends someone out. We wait outside for a few minutes and then come back in to see if it still smells. The smell is fading. I call 911 back to tell them the smoke alarm has gone off, the smell of smoke is fading, but I still don't know where it came from. He says they are almost there, let them come check it out any way. A few minutes later the house starts getting warm and I realize I've turned the heater on. Then it hits me. The heater turning on for the first time this season caused the smoke smell, and the fire alarm. Does this count this as a Courtney moment I wonder.

They ended up coming inside to check it out any way (thank God for my ten minute mad dash to hide the laundry and clean up the lunch dishes as 4 firemen + messy house would = one embarrassing moment). They did tell me I did the right thing. I couldn't figure out why I was still shaking after they had come until I realized I had gone through the thought process of "What should I save?" and realized the only important thing was to make sure the kids and I could get to safety.

New Meaning to Comfy

We woke up this morning to Shawners in Brando's sleeping spot with legs and arms spread out. We were discussing it at the coffee shop and Shawn says "I like to take his spot because he is comfy. And he smells good. He takes better showers than me, or Justinbustin, or you, that's why he smells good."

Another Year, Another Mile

Another Father's Day. Wow, I can't even remember what we did last year on Father's Day, so much has happened since then. We've packed up and left the home we knew for the last five years of our lives and moved cross country to California. Hubby started a new job, we started a new life. Bikini's, beaches, the sweet smell of salt air, and the adventure of a whole new town. One Hubby and I both knew fondly and grew up with the first 18 or so years of our lives, but one we had yet to discover together as a family. The things we've done have been wonderful and amazing, and we have many pictures to remember these moments by. The biking, the walks, the museums, the parks, the views. When spring arrived even more parts of this town showed and we went through even another layer. Now that summer has come, so have the people, so have the activities, and so have we. The beaches are cram packed with bodies not normally privileged to have the beach at their beck and call 24/7. The bonfires are staked out by 3pm and burning long into the night. To get from one side of the town to another, you better give yourself a good thirty minutes if you're taking the coastal ways, whereas a normal run is ten or fifteen.

Kite Surfing off West Cliff

Catching a Wave

The boys are on quiet time, with the little one passed out cold from a day of watching the kite surfers surfing off West Cliff, and as I sit here and write Hubby is cooking his own Father's Day dinner. The same man who has made one taco salad in the last five years made us a delicious dinner last night of fettucine and meat sauce, a cucumber and tomato salad, so wonderful that Big Guy says he ate the most of that he's ever eaten. And tonight he is making us Burgundy Wine and Garlic Skirt Steak, Mashed Potatoes and Green Onions, and Steamed Artichokes. This man can do anything when he puts his mind to it. Now that he's there I can't wait to see what happens next. It is so nice to eat at home and actually not be the one doing the cooking. It's nice to go out and eat and not have to do anything, but it's a whole other realm to be able to just sit and relax and be home while dinner is being cooked for you. And it smells sooooo good.
