Favorite Memories of My Semester

Hello long lost friends!! I did it! I survived my first full-time semester as a Mom, wife, friend, and human being. There were a few times I didn't think I was going to make it through, but then I would text a friend and they would offer their house, a beer, and a quiet place, or a word of encouragement telling me I could do it, and they believed in me, and I would truck on.

Before I took my finals I finished with an A in all four classes!! Whoohoo. For sure two have stuck - in history and english, and I'll wait to see what I get in math and psych, but I'm happy. I set out to be happy with a few B's if I got them. When that became a possible prospect I started to lose face under the reality. That led to really growing to accept it, even up to only studying an hour for my history final and still making an A on it (talk about a confidence booster ;) !!

Any way, I had a fabulous first semester, and even though I broke the last week thinking I NEVER wanted to go through this again, I actually couldn't imagine not having such an amazing opportunity to learn and meet new friends with similar lifelong goals taking the steps we all have to take to get there.

Tada! Some of my favorite memories of my semester:

Celebrating awesome exam scores with hi fives with Arisa

Late night study sessions with KT

Having someone to understand the panic attacks and anxiety with Katey

Hanging out with Marlie, Christian, Laurin, and Ambir in English

Finding a true friend in Marlie (and Katey!!)

Shocking myself with an A in history from a 58 out of 60 on the final!

People who believe in me - KT, Li, Mai, all of you, (others I'm forgetting) and all my girls from school.

Mai is Back!!!!

Just have to put a plug in for Mai - she is BACK!! She's still been posting on her blog, but she is physically in town for a few days and I am so BEYOND excited to see her! Can't wait for the Austin Bleet-up on Thursday!

On a different but related note, I am so excited that when Mai and I talked today I mentioned how overwhelmed I have been with school and exams, and she had some awesome suggestions! She suggested mixing fun classes with the core classes in order not to make the next semester so grueling and give me more time for the social support aspect that keeps me from burnout (which I'm totally experiencing right now). Thinking about not having next semester be so completely life sucking excites for the next semester for the first time since having to think about registering for classes again!! I already registered, but I think I can still switch them around. Friday will be perfect to do that since the people who haven't paid by now will be dropped then. Sad for them, yay for me!

Flying High * Flying Low

Flying High

*Applying for my FAFSA and being told by the financial aid office they don't need any verification and she can tell by the code on my acceptance that I will be getting some of the P*LL grant

*Brando leading in the top two for sales in his district

*Doing Ry & Genie's engagement portraits in downtown Aust*n and seeing Genie clap with glee upon seeing them

*Having a full day of leisurely pleasure for Valentine's Day with Brando and I

*Grocery shopping on ad and spending $110 for two weeks worth of breakfast, lunches, and dinners for four

Flying Low

*My car freaking out this morning by beeping at me and then, my trunk not opening. Then, this evening my gas cover not opening when I have only 40 miles of gas left (enough to get it to the shop).

*Brando being told he's being moved to another branch. Just as busy, but still, some normalcy and consistency would be nice.

*Brando coming down with whatever bug Shawners has had the last few days.

Why College Matters

This morning I had a conversation with my baby girl's uncle about public schools. We were talking about school ratings and how they came to be. His belief is that the schools who have low ratings are in impoverished areas whose families are working to survive and not teaching the kids that school is important. These kids aren't motivated to go to school, they aren't being taught that school is important by their parents, brothers, sisters, and relatives, and if they have no hope for college they wouldn't have the finances. Yes, the government would help them, but most don't even have the hope. His argument and tyrant struck me. I had never thought about the background behind how these schools came to be rated so low. It hit me that out of my entire family, and Brando's family, we are the only ones who think college is halfway important.

After reading this comment tonight on a savvysugar post, "Unless you're studying something that specifically is required for a career path -- like computer engineering -- your major really has very little impact on the jobs you have after college. It's all about the skills you developed and the different internships/clubs/jobs/volunteer work you have to put on your resume.", I realized how important it is that we encourage that vision in them. Brando is of the belief that you don't HAVE to have college. Which is true. We are making it without it. BUT I told him, think about how MANY more experiences you could've had. He might've ended up in the same place, but he may've been able to develop some of his passions and interests along the way such as photography, programming video games. Heck he might've even discovered more. Doesn't mean they would've been his career, but he would've had the opportunity to develop them along the way.

I want this for my kids, this opportunity for them SO bad. I told him tonight we HAVE to encourage them and make it a way of life. Our family certainly isn't going to and that's why we need to be so much more intentional about it.

Alive

It turns out Brando was a single dad"ish" for the last three weeks before our (yes, I do mean our) meltdown Wednesday night, with my working on the weekends and going to class or studying four out of five evenings. Me being in the hot Texas sun from 8am-5pm on Monday-Wednesday this week helping out with the boys cub scout camp, then going to class or falling asleep, and being utterly exhausted didn't help matters. He was overwhelmed. I was overwhelmed. Fortunately I knew I was and went to a friends house to stay the night, which didn't help his cause, though it did help mine. He didn't know he was overwhelmed though, and sent a series of VERY mean texts the following day throughout the day. As I told Allison, it was the worst text day in all my texting life. His friend convinced him to come home if I agreed to not talk about it, and he did. Over the next day I had a realization about the single Dad thing that's been going on for him. Also that one of his love languages is acts of service, and while I was busy being extremely apalled and defensive of not becoming a Stepford wife when he was upset about me not helping around the house lately (read: exhauted), he was busy feeling VERY not loved. Especially when he asked the boys to do chores and I asked him if they could wait until the next day as they were tired from being at camp all day, then he asked me if I could help out and I said, "I'm not doing NOTHING!", which started it all. Granted while I was exhausted, he was busy being exhausted in the way only working full time, making dinner and putting the kids to bed every night and having them by yourself on the weekend can make one.

So, in a nutshell, that was our very, very sad last few days. Our pastor is going to talk with us if we are willing on Sunday (or today, but Sunday works better all around). While we have sorted through this one argument, I would really like to find out how to AVOID having major meltdowns in the future, or at least talk about strategies of how to deal with them. It's not like this is the last time our lives are going to be overly stressed. In fact, I'm taking off to work here in a few minutes and realized I'll be working on Father's Day tomorrow as well. Sorry, honey!

Thank you for all your sweet comments of concern! It means so much to me, feels like a big group hug, and a bunch of really sweet individual, supportive ones to boot. Let me know if you hear of that instruction book, will ya'?

The Small Smell of a Different Campus

If it has to be a different campus, at least it has this view...

that is if you peer sideways in order to see thru the badly bubbled tinting. They must not have thought of that when they designed a building consisting mostly of windows to withstand the heat of the hill country of Texas.

The older architecture gave a slightly cramped feeling. The elementary style school desks in my classroom had me thinking of wearing a school girl outfit, which led to thoughts of Brando and I in action on the desk off to the side at the front. Those thoughts helped to ward off the yawns from hearing the professor drone on about the syllabus and making sure we knew if we needed to be in this class or not. Fortunately, all was made up for by the gorgeous view, the mirrored elevators which lessened my normal claustrophobia of elevators and in which I discovered the "awkward elevator moment" that I never truly knew existed: when you ignore the people that you're on the elevator with until you reach your destination and suddenly discover that there were other people along for the ride and quickly wish them a good day, the elaborate woodwork in the lobbies between the elevators, and the friendly faces I met. I'm so appreciative of all your support... My day rocked a lot better than I thought it would!

So Nervous

I start my fourth class tomorrow and I am sooo nervous. I know I will probably become less and less nervous as I attend more and more classes. But for the moment, new professor, new peers, new and harder material, new classroom, and this time new campus (same school) is a little frightening and overwhelming.

Huge weight lifted off my shoulders

My second math class is finished. Finisio. Done. Nada. Zip. No more. For this one, any way. I took my final Monday night and immediately felt a HUGE weight lifted off my shoulders. Maybe I will start to get some of my social life back in the next few weeks with the kids and I both on break from school. If you haven't noticed I haven't had much of a social life in the past four months. Thank God for out of town visitors (A and Laura : ), our trip to Disneyland, birthday parties (where I soak up the socialization with other moms), peers, and people who come over at 11pm on Friday nights and stay til' 3am. BUT I've made dinner plans for this Friday night with a good couple friend of ours, and even though Brando ended up having to work, we're still going to find some fun Christmas event to go to and make a night out of it. So excited!

Young Mothers

Did I ever tell you about N*cole? She's in my class at school. We've been through the first math class together and now we're going through the second math class together. Her, K*m, and I together.

N*cole is my age. In December she'll turn the same year I turned in July. She has an eight year old and a half year old. Just like me. Before her I'd never met another mother who is the same age as me with a kid as old as mine. My jaw dropped when I learned she had an eight year old. We share a special bond, her and I, knowing what being such a young mom in such a f*cked up life is like. She's my rock, my fun girl, my one I share glances with that only other 25 and 26 year old mothers with eight year olds can understand. She is everything I've never been and so much of what I am and have been. She makes me feel not afraid of my crazy and isn't afraid to face her own. Being a mother this young of such an older child is crazy and I feel it. She emailed me the sweetest email last night, cheering me on, empathizing with me, and telling me to chill the f*ck out. Then she emailed me an email she sent to one of her lovers, because she has two. One she's with and one she wishes she could be with. And I laughed when I received it and felt a kinship with her over our crazy. Way back when I would've chosen my friends based on my closed-mindedness and couldn't have imagined a friendship with someone so different, yet strangely similar. God's taken me down so many different paths that I now find the people I am the most judgemental about getting to know end up being the most fascinating and intriguing people I've ever known. His opening of my mind and overflow of that open-mindedness into my heart and our similarities brought us together and she is one of the sweetest closest friends I could've imagined and always has my back. Always. Now I find her lifestyle isn't so different than mine, we've both taken different paths to get here with some similarities along the way, and here we are, crossing at the same place and walking along together for awhile.

Freedom

I was just thinking I should create another blog about the adventures of a homeschooling mom putting her kids in public school. Ha. Any way Shawners wanted to go to his public school today, and so off he went with his new TMNT backpack. Poor Justinbustin has had so many issues in this first week - for example, he was play wrestling with a friend and the teachers took them out of the room to tell them they were breaking the rules, on the way out to the pick up line that same friend told him he hates him, then the next day the teacher moves J to a different spot and tells him he and this other kid can't be friends. He really doesn't understand what's going on, frankly neither do I, but I suppose that's part of getting used to public school. Fortunately he's so much his own man already that it hasn't affected his demeanor, thought process or his kind heart one bit. I did talk to the school registrar and she said she had to deal with the same issues with her daughter and that I need to make sure and speak up for him, protect him, and talk to the teacher about it. I called the teacher and left a message with her this morning.

On the other hand, wow does it smell like freedom without two or even one little one running underfoot! I stopped by McD's and spent just two dollars all on myself. Yum. Normally it would be $6-8 or only $4 if I didn't want anything. Honestly though, I'm such a mean mommy I never stop by McD's any way when they're around cause it's so bad for you. I've usually left that to the grandparents to spoil them with - unfortunately they haven't been out here lately so no McD's for the boys lately.

On Wednesday when they were both at school I scrubbed my kitchen and living room from top to bottom as it had gone south while Brando has been home the last four weeks with the kids. He's taken care of picking up and laundry real well, but toilets? Are you kidding me?! They were disgusting. I wouldn't have wanted my boys to use theirs had I known how bad it was and my poor guest used theirs last week. Oh well. Off to scrub those a little more today and see what else needs dedisgustinated.

PS I am continually impressed and in awe of the amazing people that come out of different environments (public, private, homeschool, or otherwise), i.e. Courtney :) , Becky, Kels, Jen, Al, Aime, Jodi, my first professor, my sweet cousin, at the same time I have to remember the crazies in my family and Brando's and wonder where they went wrong and see if there's anything I can do with my family to make sure they get all the love and care they need, however they need it, and in whatever environment they need to make it. Does that make sense? I feel like I'm doing wrong by Shawners if I see that he needs more attention at this stage in life than he's getting in a certain environment and don't do anything about it. Personally, over the past nine months I've been doing a study of girls in different school environments and by all accounts any way they go they turn out fine - except in the cases where they go to five day a week private school their entire lives which screws with their head, especially in the teen years. Maybe I need to do a study of males in different school environments since d'oh that's what I have!!!!!!!!

My school

Started Monday. It's only an hour and a half, still twice a week, this semester because of the longer timeframe of sixteen weeks instead of eleven. Yay! The girls in my study group and I signed up for the next class together with the same professor so we wouldn't get lost and would still have each other! He's still going at lightning speed, but as long as I get the homework and have time to see a tutor if need be I do okay. So fun to see them again! The last two weeks of break FLEW by.

Update on school

It's funny how my oldest one seems to be craving the public school environment. A friend and he were play hitting each other yesterday and the teachers spoke to them and told them they weren't following the rules. That worked out fine, but for some reason on the way out this kid that was his friend tells him he hates him. Grreeaaaaat. Well I just told him there's somebody like that everywhere and it's too bad for those people, but it gives a warning signal that we can keep those people who get offended when we didn't do anything wrong at bay and keep the true friends who don't get offended when we don't do anything wrong close. So even after all that he says this morning he wants to attend public school over the two day a week school he did last year. I think this is going to be a good year for him.

Shawners, on the other hand, came back from school yesterday a TERROR. I have never seen him like that and I am not willing to do that to him. He was craving attention and he got no hugs all day long! Five is too young to not get a hug for eight hours. So Brando is going to figure out a night job so we can keep him in his two day a week school and hire a nanny to pick him up and for the one day of the week I'm working. Brando will have off on the weekends so he'll be able to have the kids then. He really wants to send Justinbustin to the two day a week school too, but he's really enjoying the public school so I really don't mind him staying. We'll see on that aspect.

Public vs. Private vs. What the heck do I do?

Interesting comment:

Jerry Hill | April 4, 2007 2:37 pm

One thing that has not been mentioned is the fact that public schools must educate all children to the level of proficiency. This means special needs children (10-20 percent of the school age population) and children who speak little or no English as well as many students who do not wish to be in school, but are nevertheless commanded to be there. These special populations eat up manpower, facility, and technological dollars far out of proportion to their numbers and they are, logically, the most difficult to educate. When you wonder why public schools cost more, this is your basic answer. When you remove special education students, non-English students and non-student students, you have a private school!

Cited from: http://www.homelandstupidity.us/2006/07/18/do-public-and-private-schools-compare/

From a study comparing private schools versus public schools:
"In general, the average scores in reading and mathematics of students in private schools were found to be higher than those of students in public schools."

Can you tell my minds not made up? I think I just found my dissertation subject. No I'm not writing one right now - when I get to that point!

Ended Math Class AND accepted a Job Offer in One Day!!

Whoohoo!! I am totally going to have an office, bonuses, BRAND NEW property we'll be opening up. SO. FREAKIN. EXCITING. The position I'll be in is a coveted one in the industry and I'm so in awe that I got it. And SO. EXCITED.

Last math class today! It was the final. Thanks for all the good luck wishes - I think they helped : ) . I studied last night at Starbucks and got off work early today to hit the tutor to clarify a few things before the final. I was the first one done out of the three of us study partners which surprised me - I always thought I took the longest on tests out of the three of us. Up until this point we've taken them separately though so I had no idea. Don't know what my grade is yet but I feel like I did pretty well. I double checked, changed a few answers, crossed my fingers, and had a beer with the girls when I was done.

And some awesome sex when I got home. Oh and together Brando and I with the job offers we've accepted will be pulling in well over what we figured we need to make it. On top of that we're selling our house in Marble Falls so if that sells soon we'll be able to pay off our debt. More crossed fingers!

Shawners says,

"Give this to Mommy please: Hugs and kisses."

Brando tells me this after I got home tonight after going over to a friend's after class to study for our final on Wednesday. Wish me luck! With working all the time lately I need it.

"Because there's six flags on the sign"

And that's why it's called Six Flags, Shawners says.

We've had the awesome opportunity to go there two. weekends. in. a. row. - for less than the cost of one person per time! Last weekend we had three free tickets and only had to pay for Brando's ticket. The four of us went and enjoyed the kiddie rides and the water park with the boys. THIS weekend friends of ours were going and wanted us to come with. Saturday night I discovered we could go for $10/person as a friend with their season passes. Awesome.

So yesterday we went and this time rode the coasters. There were three of us couples - two of us were married and the other are boyfriend and girlfriend, our boys, and one of the couples little toddler girl. So we all took turns watching the kids and rode Tony Hawk's Big Spin, The Poltergeist, Superman, and the big water slides in the water park. It's been years since I rode a rollercoaster - Aime said I whimpered on the Superman, Rian just laughed at me on the Tony Hawk's Big Spin, and Brando laughed at me on the Poltergeist (0-60 in a few seconds) with my alternate screaming and laughing. I'm pretty sure my throat was soar after that one.

Justinbustin went on his first roller coaster and big water slide ever yesterday! I asked him how he liked it and he says, "Fun and scary." He went on one waterslide, loved it, and then went on the The Twister waterslide and screamed the whole time. He totally went on a different waterslide afterwards though. I am so proud of him.

I've never had so much fun with two couples in my life! One of the couples is a couple who have been coming over the past few weekends... at 11pm at night and staying until 3am or 5am because well, that's when we have time to hang out these days : ) . And they rock. The other couple we actually met the couple who has been coming over through and were clients of Brando's a year ago. This is the second time we've been able to hang out with them because they live way down south, and it was so much fun. We introduced them to our favorite, Chipotle, after the park, and Chipotle's fabulous $3 margaritas, and had a great time at dinner. Brando was singing Adam Sandler's first CD "Mop, mop, mop all day long. Mop, mop, mop while I sing this song." in the voice Adam sings it in, and Aime says, "A year ago when we met Brando I never imagined I'd be sitting here listening him to sing a song in that voice. He was so professional." Brando says we all have the different hats we wear.

I had so much fun! Now with today off I'm kicking back with the kids and finishing up studying for my final exam on Wednesday. Unfortunately I skipped out on studying with the group yesterday when I went to Six Flags, and they weren't able to meet in the evening. So I'll go over to one of the girls house today and go over the review and homework with her and that'll be good. Tomorrow I go back to work. Brando went back to work today and I so still haven't found a babysitter for Tuesday and Thursday. My Starbucks girl is busy with company this week and I'm so screwed if I don't start making some phone calls!! Ahhh!!! I think figuring out somebody to babysit is the hardest part of working!

A few thoughts...

because there's so many that don't even really have anything to do with each other I'm trying the whole heading thing my life is brilliant did once upon a time. Only hers was a story.

Crazy Month

The month of July has been so crazy that I didn't notice until today, the very last day of July, that my calendar was still on June.

Cuteness of my self-proclaimed
"Zoologist, Zoo Veterinarian, and Animal Rescuer" little guy

When Brando asked Shawners why Batman is his favorite superhero, Shawners replies, "Because... Batman... Because I like animals."

I'm a working woman!

My first assignment was for one day yesterday and it was AWESOME. And they wanted me back today. I helped prepare for their grand opening celebration they hosted this evening by putting together 150 gift bags (complete with wine bottles with personalized labels - totally made me think of the bags they give to celebrities at events like Sundance). Being around professionals and actually working myself reminded me of how much I liked being an advertising representative at a newspaper way back when eight years ago. In fact when I got off work today I called that newspaper to see if anyone I worked with still worked there and could tell future potential bosses how much I rock. There were three still there and they remember me and will totally do it! That was an awesome feeling.

New phone, old plan

We had switched my cell phone plan to Sprint to try and save money but when a $312 bill came in for the first month and it took three and a half hours (which included an hour of hold and an hour of talking to someone explaining my issue only come to find out she couldn't even help me) to get them to knock off $90 plus $30 for texting I was supposed to have free and then waive the cancellation fee. I am happy they did that so I could switch back to Verizon at least, but I am still sad it took the person at the END OF THE LINE to satisfy the customer. Brando went and signed me back up with Verizon this evening (yay IN minutes!) and got me this:

Complete with this pink silicone cover:

LOVE it!! And it takes the BEST pictures. The other phone I had with Sprint was red (okay, but not pink) and took CRAPPY pictures. This one rocks the pictures. And because Brando is with a certain real estate company he gets a 20% discount on our primary line and got this phone free. It was worth the $174 to Sprint just to find that out.

School and tests

Oh, by the way, that test I didn't study for I so still got a 93 on. Go me! Plus the final exam can make up for two of our other scores, so hopefully I rock that like I did the first three with studying and all!

Because I owe you an update

Brando and I are on the mend. Those four days away on my birthday weekend were the best thing I could have ever done - I can't wait until San Diego in August when I go see my cousin!! Back to that weekend, it totally allowed my head to clear and realize I WANT this marriage, and I WANT Brando. The good friend I stayed with called me out on something I REALLY needed to hear. She listened to a message Brando left me the morning after I left and noticed he said, "When you get home could we please respectfully talk about the issues we need to talk about?" She mentioned how important respect is to a guy and told me about a book she read last year called Love & Respect and how it really helped her marriage. She had actually given it to me to read about six months ago but I wasn't ready for it. That weekend I totally noticed how great her marriage is and her hubs was even out of town! He was so sweet on the phone (both our guys are very hard to get to talk on the phone guys), he paid for pedicures for her and I, for our hotel Saturday, and for Brando to send me flowers on my birthday and a standing raincheck to take me out to dinner anytime because we had no money! The book talks about how a guy's deepest need is to be respected, and a girl's deepest need is to feel loved. When I'm being disrespectful to him it's the same as him being unloving to me. So I've been working on it. It's a hard book for me to chew and so far I've only read the chapters pertaining to what is REALLY driving me crazy. I still subscribe to the "well he needs to EARN my respect", but then I think how would I feel if he said I have to earn his love. We're able to have a conversation now without blocking the other person out and not talking at all and ending up going our separate ways. Plus! I'm working! He's totally okay with it AND supportive. It's still hard getting him on board with arranging the babysitting which I told him he needs to be equally responsible for, so we're working on getting him fully on board with that. Especially since HE starts his new job next week!

Dum de dum dum

You know that feeling Courtney posted about awhile ago (that I'm too lazy to go find the link to but go check her out, she's awesome AND just moved to the big city, SF)? The one where you have soooo much to catch up on that you don't even know where to start with a post? And then you just decide you're going to jump back in where you're at because that's all you can do? That's where I'm at.

Today I'm going to a training for becoming a leasing agent with a temporary firm. I asked the sweet girls up at our leasing office if they were hiring. Unfortunately they are not, but they sent me to this place because it's the best one in Austin and it's where our apartments get all their hires from. Plus the girls were telling me 80% of the people who go through this temporary place end up being hired on permanently after a few assignments. That, and once I get the training, I can walk around and look for permanent jobs on my own. One more thing for the resume. Yay! Can't wait to get that degree on there.

Speaking of school this course I'm in is going at lightning speed. I've never experienced the "final" week but I have a feeling I'm about to. We've had three tests in the last four weeks and it's not slowing down anytime soon. I am LOVING understanding math though. I am completely tickled pink that I can actually understand some of this crap. It's so much fun trying to get Brando to help me and having to explain it to him!

The kids have been bounced off to babysitter after babysitter the last few weeks, and they are loving it. By the grace of God I found a babysitter last week while studying at Starbucks and the kids LOVE her. She is off to Germany for a few weeks but we used her to the fullest extent her the last few days she was here and hope we don't burn her out when she gets back ; ) ! We're considering public school for them, but really feel like it would be good for Shawners to have the at home and at school environment Justinbustin got to experience. On top of that I really need to look into the gifted and talented part at public school and I hear that's a bear. That'll be interesting.

PS So want to do a 'Girl Bloggers that Rock' post. Apparently I rock according to Sarah and Laura. I want to write about the girl bloggers that I love that rock!
